DEATH OF MR A WHITTA JP
The funeral of Mr Albert Whitta JP of Manchester House, Methwold, who passed away on Tuesday Jan 2nd (1917), took place on Monday afternoon at the Wesley Church, of which the deceased had been a prominent member. Mr Whitta was born in Brandon in 1840, and was educated at the Free Grammar School. At the age of ten he commenced to work for Lord William Powlett, and at 16 years old he went to London and was employed in an establishment at Kensington for some years.Eventually he returned to Brandon, and was in business with his brother for some years. Finally he came to reside at Methwold, of which parish he became an overseer, parish councillor, magistrate, etc. He was the senior partner in the firm of Messrs A Whitta and Sons. He had held prominent offices in the Wesleyan Church, including those of circuit steward, trustees' treasurer, Manse trustee, Sunday School Superintendent, etc. The deceased was of a genial, kindly, and industrious disposition, and was well known and highly respected. The principal mourners were:- Mrs S E Whitta (widow), Mr William Rought (son), Miss K E Whitta (daughter), Mr & Mrs Alfred Whitta (son & dau-in-law) and Mr George Whitta (son).The funeral service was conducted by the Rev G F K Knifton (resident minister), assisted by the Rev J Park Jackson of Stoke Ferry, in the Wesleyan Church, and afterwards in the cemetery. During the service the hymns "When the day of toil is done" and "Peace, perfect peace" were sung. By request there were no floral tributes, with the exception of those from children, grandchildren and the Trustees of the Wesleyan Church.
DEATH OF MR A WHITTA, Methwold
The death of Mr Albert Whitta JP of Methwold took place on Tuesday night at his residence, Manchester House, in his 77th year. He was a prominent member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church, and held the offices of circuit steward, Sunday School Superintendent, and nearly every minor office in the church. He was also an overseer and the people's churchwarden, Chairman of the Parish Council, and succeeded the Rev Denny Gedge on the magisterial bench. Mr Albert Whitta was born at Brandon on June 20th 1840, and was educated at the Free Grammar School, Brandon, Suffolk. At the age of 16 he went to London and was employed in a Kensington warehouse, but his health gave way, and he returned to Brandon, where for some years he assisted his brother in business. In 1868 he married the only daughter of the late Mr William Rought, furrier, of Brandon. From thence he removed to Methwold of which parish he had been a prominent member. The deceased leaves a widow, two daughters, and four sons, the youngest of whom is serving in a New Zealand Regiment.
