WILL OF SAMUEL MANNING 1848
This is the last will and
testament of me Samuel Manning of
Hockwold cum Wilton in the County of Norfolk, farmer.
First I give and devise unto my
dear wife, Ellen Manning all the
messuages, cottages and hereditaments belonging to me situate in Hockwold cum
Wilton aforesaid (except the lands in the Moor and in the Fen containing
together thirty three acres, more or less) to hold the same, except as
aforesaid, for and during the term of her natural life. And upon her decease I
devise the said messuages cottages, land and hereditaments except as aforesaid
unto the several persons hereinafter named (viz)
I give and devise all that
messuage with the barns, stables,
yard wash right and appurtenances (except the three roods of land) now in my own occupation unto my
grandson, Joseph Manning Enefer and
his heirs
And I give and devise unto my
grandson John Enefer the cottages in
the occupation of his father and George Fuller and also the wash right thereto belonging and the three
roods of land (more or less) with their appurtenances to hold to him, the said John
Enefer and the heirs of his body
lawfully begotten, and upon condition that he neither sells nor mortgages the
said last mentioned cottages and land or either of them
And I give and devise unto my
grandson, Samuel Enefer and his heirs
all that cottage with the yard and appurtenances in the occupation of Frances Fuller
And I give and devise unto my
grandson William Enefer and his heirs all that cottage with the yard and
appurtenances in the occupation of Henry Morley
And I give and devise unto my
grand daughter Mira Enefer all that
cottage with the yard and appurtenances in the occupation of Mrs Collins and the wash right thereto belonging to hold to her and
her heirs
And I give and devise unto my
granddaughter Sarah Enefer and her
heirs all that cottage with the appurtenances in the occupation of Susan Green
And I give and devise unto my
said grandson Joseph Manning Enefer
all those thirteen acres more or less lying in the Moor and all those twenty
acres more or less lying in the Fen in Hockwold cum Wilton aforesaid to have
and to hold to him and his heirs and assigns subject nevertheless and charged
and chargeable with the payment of all principal and interest monies charged thereon
and also subject to the payment of one annuity or clear yearly rent charge of
Ten Pounds a year payable in half portions every year unto my said wife during the term of her natural life and
I give to my said wife and her assigns the power to distrain for the same upon
the said lands whenever the said portions of the said annuity shall be unpaid
for twenty one days
And I also charge the messuage and homestead herein before
devised to my said grandson Joseph Manning Enefer and his heirs after the decease of his said grandmother
with the payment of twenty pounds to his sister Elizabeth Hubbard in ten yearly equal sums of two pounds each without
deduction and her receipts alone to be a sufficient discharge for the same
And also to and with the payment
of thirty pounds in three equal payments of ten pounds each clear unto my
granddaughter Ellen Enefer whose
receipts alone shall be his discharge
And I devise my household
furniture to my said wife and my live and dead farming stock (except the crops
which are to go with the lands) I direct shall be sold by my Executors
hereinafter named and open payment of my simple contract debts funeral and testamentary
expences (sic)
And the residue I bequeath to my
said wife
And I appoint my said grandsons,
Joseph Manning Enefer and Samuel
Enefer to be executors of this my will,
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this twenty ninth day of
December one thousand eight hundred and forty eight.

CODICIL
This is a codicil to be added to
and taken as part of the last will and testament of me Samuel Manning of Hockwold cum Wilton in the County of Norfolk, farmer,
dated the twenty ninth day of December one thousand eight hundred and forty
eight. Whereas I have given and devised unto my grand daughters, Mira and Sarah
respectively and their respective heirs all those two cottages with their
appurtenances now in the occupation of Mrs Collins and Susan Green,
and whereas I intended also to have given them the stack yard now in my own
occupation behind the said two cottages, and it may be presumed by my said will
devised such stack yard to my grandson Joseph Manning Enefer, and if so I do hereby revoke the same devise to him and
do hereby give and devise unto my said grand daughters Mira Enefer and Sarah
Enefer all that said stack yard to hold
to them and their heirs as tenants in common and not as joint tenants
And I direct that the division
fence between the land devised to my said grand daughters and my said grandson Joseph
Manning Enefer shall be staked out as
soon after my decease as possible by my grandson Samuel Enefer who is instructed by me so to do
And I direct that a wall shall
be erected between my said grand daughter Sarahıs part and my grandson Joseph Manning Enefer and his heirs and that the division fence so directed to
be made shall be at the expence of my said grand son Joseph Manning Enefer and his heirs and be kept in repair by and at the expence
of my said grand daughter Mira and
her heirs
In all other respects I confirm
my said will in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this first day of
January one thousand eight hundred and forty nine.
