OBITUARY for George John FOWELL

We regret to chronicle the death of Mr George John Fowell which took place on Friday last in his residence at Ermine Street Huntingdon. The deceased who was 58 years of age, had ben ill for about a fortnight. He was the son of the late Mr J Fowell of St Ives and was born at Thetford on Nov 17th 1842. Mr Fowell lived for a number of years at St Ives, and was much respected in the town. In May, 1893, Mr Fowell who was a liberal in politics was elected on the St Ives Town Council at a bye-election caused by the removal of Mr Mins[t?]on from the district, beating Mr Barton, the conservative candidate by 13 votes. He was re-elected at the next November election and again three years later, the latter time without opposition. Mr Fowell did not seek re-election in 1899. He was a Wesleyan, and well known in the neighbourhood. He was the founder of the late firm of Messrs Fowell and Son, Engineers, of St Ives and removed to Huntingdon two years ago to take the position of Manager of the firm of Messrs Harvey and Williams.

THE FUNERAL

took place on Monday afternoon at the Huntingdon cemetary. A short service was held in the chapel and was concluded at the graveside, The Rev T H Fenn, the Wesleyan minister officiating. The mourners were Mrs Fowell, .....(unreadable), Mr and Mrs A Fowell (son and daughter-in-law, Miss Fowell (sister) Mr and Mrs Stephen Oldman, Thetford (brother-in-law and sister), Mr and Mrs Crossland, Newark, Mr John Wesley, Stretham, Mr Elbourn, Meldreth, Mr Stratton, Mr J Kiddle, Mr F Giddins and Mr E Kiddle of St Ives, Mr R G Reid, Thetford, and a number of old hands from Thetford. The coffin was plain oak with brass furniture and bore the following inscription on the breastplate:

A number of beautiful floral decorations were sent, the inscriptions being as follows:-

Messrs F B Thackray and Co were the undertakers.
