| From a family reunion in 1898 this story about Manley: Manly Kemble, the Hayes' Uncle, discarded all these, and walked nearly a thousand miles, from New Jersey to Indiana, carrying considerable money in his belt. Another story was told by himself. At Moscow the store keeper took him for a dead-beat from the style of his costume, and when he was asked to cut off a few yards of shirting, was told by the merchant "we don't trust." Mr. Kemble offered him a $100 bill to change but he couldn't do it, and lost a sale and a customer. |
| From his oral will (on file at the Decatur County, Indiana, courthouse in Greensburg Indiana) we learn that Isaiah Garwood Kemble was crushed while felling a tree. He lived three days and dictated his will. Later his friends took inventory of his possessions. Included were five books, one of them a bit startling. The first four were on farming and animal husbandy. The fifth was Ovid's "Art of Love." Very racy material for an Indiana farmer! |
