Summary of WILL of Herbert MORLEY 11 Sep 1606



Devises lands called the Great and Little Swyll in Glynde, and lands called the Barnes and Hawkesden Park in Mayfield, reserving the woods and iron works, to wife Anne for life, besides her jointure, then to brother Robert Morley in tail male, with reversion to the right theirs .

Devises to wife Anne all his lands in Pevensey for bringing up his daughters Margaret and Chrisogon until age 18.

Devises the manor of Glynde and lands in Glynde, Mayfield, Heathfield, Wadhurst and Ringmer, except for lands called Gilhope in Mayfield bought of the Butcher brothers, to Robert Morley in tail male, remainder to Anthony Morley in tail male and reversion to the right heirs of Harbert Morley. Condition that if Robert Morley or Anthony Morley do not pay 3,000 pounds each to his daughters Margaret and Chrisogon at age 18 or his mother-in-law [i.e. his step-mother] Margaret Morley infringes the will that then all the bequests to Robert and Anthony Morley shall be void and the heirs of (a) shall enter the premises.

Bequeaths 5 pounds each to his servants John Savage and Richard the musician.

Bequeaths 5 marks each to Anthony Fynche, gent., and Robert Brewster, and 40s. each to all his other servants; 5 pounds each to William Newton, gent., and Thomas Carew.

Bequeaths to his uncle-in-law, Sir Marmaduke Darell, the wardship of his nephew Hayes to perform the same according to the trust reposed in (a) by John Hayes, gent., dec'd. He is to take no profit from the marriage.

Appoints brother, Robert Morley, executor of his will and Sir Marmaduke Darell and Richard Mylborne, D.D., overseers. Sir Marmaduke is to have his black ambling horse and Richard Mylborne his black ambling nag.

Bequeaths 100 pounds to the Constables of Lewes to remain with them 'and of the fellowshipp of the said Constables commonlie called the twelve.' 50 pounds and 30 pounds is to be put out at the rate of 8 per cent. to be paid yearly for the benefit of 'poore new maryed folkes' and 'younge begynners' in Glynde and Beddingham respectively and in default of such married people to the poor of those parishes. 20 pounds at the same rate for the same classes in Lewes, and in default, then to the poor of the town.

Devises to brother, Robert Morley, his lands in co. Lincoln, and in Pevensey and Gilhope in Mayfield for these to be sold to pay the legacies bequeathed in the will.
