In 1871 they were both at "1 on clink" Winterton and staying with them were grandchild John and his wife Elsie as well as great grandchildren Elsie, Sarah and Martha. Samuel and Sarah were both paupers.

James, who had been awarded the RNLI Silver Medal and bar, was the man who in giving evidence at the Beauchamp disaster inquest when the coroner asked "1 suppose they had not given up the job and were returning." His reply became part of lifeboat folklore. He stated: "They would never give up the ship. If they had to keep at it 'til now, they would have sailed about until daylight to help her, Going back is against the rules when we see distress signals like that." These words, translated by journalists, were to become famous throughout the length and breadth of the land - Caistor MEN NEVER TURN BACK.

Note: In 1861 and 1871 James was a beachman and Fisherman and the family were at The Beach Road, Winterton. In 1881 James, still at Beach Road is recorded as a boatman and the 1891 census says that he was a lifeboatman, still at Beach Road
