This page is of the original research which is now known to have but a small likelihood of being correct. Because there is a slim chance that it is right, it is included, but my well proven ancestry is shown here

The parish register of Whatfield does not have any earlier names, but the will of William Grene of Lindsey, dated 1461 may be seen here. In addition there are letters of administration granted to John Grene of Lindsey in 1461 in respect of a John Grene of Chelsworth.
Both the 1524 and 1568 Subsidy returns list William Green and Hewe Green in Lindsey
No direct link to any of these is currently known, but they are probably of our family.

There is some question about Thomas. Was he the son of Benjamin as shown or was he the Thomas born within a couple of years at Combs? A possible clue to Thomas Green's family origins can be found in his will, which includes "that Copyhold Estate lying and being in the Parish of Great Finborough in the County of Suffolk". Further research is ongoing

w74......James b abt 1769 Whatfield bur 17 Nov 1864 Whatfield

Note: There was a James Green bap in Semer on 26 Mar 1786, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth. It may well be this James, or it could be that w74 James was indeed the son of Cornelius and Sarah - at his marriage he was stated to be "of this parish", but in the census returns he is shown to be born in Semer. and therefore the son of Joseph Green and Elizabeth. (90% probability) -

w78 William GREEN m Anne VINCE 12 Oct 1795 Semer

Note: One if the witnesses at the wedding was Joseph GREEN. William was a labourer.

Further research by Francis Howcutt shows this William to be in some doubt. w78 William would have been 37 at the time of his marriage, but there was another William recorded in the 1851 census who was buried aged 84 on 22 Jun 1856 - making him 21 at the time of marriage. There seems to be no record of his baptism in the Semer register. His will of 11 Nov 1850 lists his children and includes those below together with a William a Samuel and a Mary. (Mary m John CLARKE of Colchester, a woodman) William was a woodman and cast iron dealer in Semer who died 4 Jun 1856.It seems pretty certain that he was the true William and not the one shown in this tree; his parentage sadly is unknown. However, the w78 William remains an outside possibility

w102 James GREEN m Dinah RAMPLIN (b abt 1802 Hadleigh bur 28 Feb 1870 West Norwood) 28 Oct 1824 Hadleigh

Note: Two boys called James Green were christened at Semer within a short period of each other - a son of William & Anne (12 April 1801) and a son of James & Mary (28 March 1802). They both appear in census returns (one - the husband of Sarah - at Colchester from 1841 to 1871 and the other - the husband of Dinah Ramplin - at Norwood from 1841 to 1861). The death of James Green was registered at Colchester in the December quarter 1878 aged 77 and the other James Green was buried at St Luke, West Norwood on 2 April 1869 aged 67. The ages given in censuses for the Colchester James were 1841 = 40 (i.e. 40/44 group), 1851 = 50, 1861 = 60 and 1871 = 70. The ages given in censuses for Norwood James were 1841 = 35 (i.e. 35/39 group), 1851 = 49, 1861 = 61. This evidence (discounting the inconsistent age given at Norwood in 1861) establishes that the Norwood James was the younger person and so the son of James & Mary.

Note: Mary was the daughter of James FROST and Susan GREEN

w104 Robert GREEN m Deborah RAMPLIN 10 Nov 1829 Whatfield (see Ramplin branch here)

Note: in 1841 Robert and Deborah are recorded in Semer; in 1851 at Horns Cottages, Knights Hill Road, Norwood, London,; in 1861 at Commerce Place Norwood and in 1871 at Elm Grove, Norwood. Robert d before 1881 but Deborah was living at Thornback Row, Knights Hill Road, Norwood in 1881

In the 1841 census there was a Susannah at the same address as Robert and Deborah, but there was a Susannah dau of Robert and Mary Green bap Feb 3 1833 who is missing from the 1841 census with Robert and Mary, and I think this Susannah is Robert and Mary's, not Robert and Deborah's - or maybe there were two Susannahs born about the same time.
