Potted history of the Brown family
Robert Brown, baptised 5 Dec 1790 Rushmere St Andrews was the son of Robert Brown and Charlotte Miles. He married Margaret Marjoram 11 May 1814 at Hasketon and they had eight children
William (Marjoram) (illegitimate son of Margaret)
Note: He was brought up in the [Marjoram] family at Hasketon. In April 1817, he moved in with his mother at Nacton. He was supported by regular Poor Rate payments, both at Hasketon, until March 1817, and from April 1817 at Nacton of 3/- or 2/6 per week. On 1st July 1822 he was taken to the Nacton workhouse, aged 13, and from there he was apprenticed out on 11th October 1822 to Mr W. Durrant. He may have found himself eventually in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, but later, by 1845, seems to have returned to Hasketon with his wife and family (1851 Census). His youngest daughter was baptised there; her older brothers and sisters in Essex, mainly at Burnham.
Their children were:
Maria b 1815
Elizabeth b 1817
Mary b 1819
Abraham b 1821
Charlotte b 1823
Robert b 1826
John
However, all survived to adulthood. Robert and his wife lived latterly in a cottage about a mile from where Kenneth Brown now lives, and died in 1847. Their eldest son, Robert (the one who spent 4 years in care) eventually secured a job as shepherd at Nacton. His wife's immediate younger brother and his eldest son were transported to Australia in 1837 on a vague charge of larceny, and got caught up in the gold rush, so had the last laugh, even though they had to serve their 14 yrs.
The father came home, found his wife and took her back out to Australia, along with his younger son. Arthur Brown, born 1856 was the only survivor of 5 children born to his consumptive mother, who died age 26 years when he was only 4. He was brough up by an aunt and uncle, who were also giving house room to his grandfather Robert (who had spent 4 yrs in the Workhouse).

Arthur Brown with son Bertie, grandson Bertrum and Kenneth Brown.
